Amie McCarron for the Alcoholics Anonymous New Zealand websites; the public facing site, service/members site and annual convention website.

Your Nomination
Title for nomination:

Amie McCarron for the Alcoholics Anonymous New Zealand websites; the public facing site, service/members site and annual convention website.

Nominee's name or organisation:

Amie McCarron – Bluebubble Design

Overview of your nomination:

ast year I took on an extremely challenging web development project to build three related websites for Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). The three websites had to be able to be managed easily by a single CMS solution and share a number of features including look & feel, the online store, meeting details and users. I selected multiple open source products to meet the clients requirements and worked closely with them for 9 months to deliver the solution.

Reasons for winning this award:

AA is fully self-supported, funded only by member contributions and therefore the budget for this project was extremely limiting. However by proposing use of free and open source software along with a large amount of pro-bono effort their requirements were able to be met within budget. The project took literally hundreds of hours over a period of 9 months. Over 90%* of the work was completed by myself from the proposal, project management, design, development, communications with client, liaison with support teams for the OS products, and training the administrator how to manage the sites and components. Due to the large amount of data to be managed and shared, this was a difficult project. Discovery of the JMS Multisites was integral to properly integrating all three websites and making it easy for the non-technical administrators to manage the site on a daily basis. Working closely with the JMS developers, the method for implementing this solution for this project was able to be worked out. Commitment to delivering each requirement and providing A.A. the best website possible using the selected solutions resulted in the following benefits to the customer and their audiences: • A new functional and well structured website enhancing the image of A.A. in New Zealand making it more inviting to people of all ages who might think they have a drinking problem. • Enabling more targeted information to be shared with both the public and members using Joomla! user and content based permissions. • Making information for those seeking help for either themselves or others more freely available and easy to find. Allowing people to register on members site and thus gain even more information about A.A. and support services using the free OS Community Builder extenstion. • Enabling the service structure and committees of AA to operate and share information, both content and the uploading of documents using a free OS document management component and OS form components. • Greater efficiencies in handling the sales/payment process of selling A.A. literature via the online store using a free OS online store component. • Making it easier for members to donate. • An online registration and payment process for the annual convention making it easier for attendees to sign up and organisers to manage the process using OS DTRegister. • Providing an easy and fast way to locate a meeting anywhere in New Zealand using free OS event management component. Previously this was managed manually and often contained inaccurate and out-of-date details due to Meeting Co-ordinators being required to send their changes through to another person to update. Now this is managed online and Meeting Co-ordinators are able to update their own meeting details once an administrator assigns them editor privileges. Without this open source solution, there is no doubt A.A. would not of been able to provide the public and members such a valuable resource. *I did employ temporary help for some data entry, content setup and a small amount of development on the meeting finder.

Supporting Information
Use and benefits of open source:

After researching the available extensions, it was verified that Joomla! could provide the base functionality required by all three sites. Summary of main OS products used: Content Management System = Joomla! Sharing Installation, Users & Extensions = JMS Multisites Meeting Finder = JEvents Online Store = Virtuemart Member Registration = Community Builder Conference Registration = DTRegister Document Management = RokDownloads Online Forms = BlueFlame Forms The most impressive feature of this project is the implementation of JMS Multisites. This took many days of working out how to install and set up and what features to use. This is what enabled sharing of much of the data and extensions (e.g. online store, user registration, meeting finder) and also means going forward that updates to the core Joomla! installation only need to be applied once and all sites will be updated. Throughout the build, the official Joomla! forum was utilised as well as the forums provided by a number of the add-ons such as Virtuemart, JMS Multisites and JEvents. Any bugs were reported as were any solutions found later to questions raised so as to help give back to the community. Suggestions for enhancements to the various add-ons were also made including providing plugins and code for review to JMS Multisites for evaluating if they could be included. Without Open Source and A.A. would not have been able to enhance their internet presence to this extent.

Recent achievements:

Since launch of www.aa.org.nz in April the average visitor figure has jumped to 4,500 a month from an average of 3000 for same 4 months previously. The extensive use of help and contact forms has resulted in over a 100% increase of people contacting A.A. directly for help. An average of 3 people a day have been registering on www.aamembers.org.nz despite that there has not yet been any public announcement or promotion of the members site since it went live on 6/7/10. A number of international A.A. organisations have been impressed with the New Zealand sites and commented that they provide a good basis for what they should be looking at doing themselves. Positive feedback continues to be received such as the following examples: “I just wanted to say how wonderful the new website looks - it is professional and very easy to use. What a good advertisement for AA. I don't know who designed it but if possible please pass on my thanks.” “Hi just wanted to let you know that this website is great! I am a newly sober AA in London but about to return to NZ and wanted to have a look at meetings available. The site has offered me more than just information for myself - I will pass onto family and friends' the website address as it explains my disease better then I can. And it looks lovely - like you've put a lot of working into it. Thanks - I feel better equipped about my return sober.”

Plans for future work:

• To take the monthly publication which is currently mailed out to subscribers and make it available online to those registered subscribers on the Service website. • Integrate social media and create a member’s only online forum. • Enhance the meeting finder.
