Bronwyn Holloway-Smith's "Ghosts in the form of gifts"

Your Nomination
Title for nomination:

Bronwyn Holloway-Smith's "Ghosts in the form of gifts"

Nominee's name or organisation:

Bronwyn Holloway-Smith

Overview of your nomination:

Bronwyn brought together designers and Open Source technologies to recreate some of the lost treasures of the Te Papa collection from photographs and drawings.

Reasons for winning this award:

This project used Open Source machines - the RepRap - to recreate physical artefacts from Te Papa that had been lost or destroyed over the years. The finished files for the artefacts were released under a Creative Commons licence so that anyone who wished to could create their own exhibits. Most of these represented items of significance to Pacific cultures.

Supporting Information
Use and benefits of open source:

By releasing the designs in an Open format and Open licencing, the lost artefacts have a continued existence. Using Open software and hardware to produce physical artefacts places the capability to produce exhibitions of similar art in the hands of all. Hopefully this will encourage other museums and institutions to release Open models of their collections.

Recent achievements:

Bronwyn is also vigorously active in campaigning against censorship, software patents, and for government transparency.

Plans for future work:

A second "print" of the exhibition is currently scheduled for early next year.
